Dear Richard: I beg your pardon for not getting a letter to you last week. We just seem to keep pretty busy, I am sitting in my room up-stairs while Caroline is talking to some callers down stairs. She still seems to feel pretty well and keeps going much of the day.
We are having our first roasting ears for supper this evening. Wish you were here. I had a little upset with my tummy Fri. night 7 had to lie around Sat. & Sun. but I seem to be all right again.
We have been all worked up about the peace offer with Japan & I suppose you are too. Hope it will come soon.
I had a letter from Dan with pictures of baby John & Danny. Will enclose one to you.
I am very anxious to know how your thesis is coming on & whether you will be able to get away a few weeks some where. The summer is flying and it looks like I will be here till Sept. What do you know about things? Where you are to live next year? Did you order the suit? Is your thesis about done & etc & etc & etc.
If the war is over soon, there will soon be plenty of houses I imagine, but I am leaving it up to you. James has said they would be glad to have me stay here & Dan said they would be glad to have me there so be free to decide things as you think best.
Mary Anne Charles went home about ten days ago. Paul met her in N.Y. & helped them make the change.
I may have told you that Margy's daughter Dorothy has a little son, so that makes me great grandmother. I guess that is the reason I am feeling old.
Diane is now practicing her piano lesson. It seems to consist largely of hymns and she sings along as she plays. She is a fine little girl.
Carrie is way out in Minnesota attending a conference of some kind.
I have knitted a "soaker" for the new baby. It is a pair of wool pants to wear over the diaper. I think I will knit another pair.
I have slept under blankets every night since I came and had to wear a sweater many days. Today it is warming up.
James has a nice flower garden and has corn, beans, tomatoes, beets, brochly, [sic] Swill chard, onions, & lettuce to eat. So we are getting plenty of vitamins.
James had one wedding and missed another one because he was out of town.
Caroline's bridge club gave her a shower of pretty things to use for herself and baby. Dr. Caughey is still able to preach occasionally and [Mr.] Wright is still the organist.
Mr. Trayer made them a nice table for the porch. It folds up to the wall when not in use. We eat there most of the time.
Hoping to hear from you soon.
With loads of love
Mother.
A card from Aunt Ella says "Howard in bad shape. Don is moving to Janesville to get work." I hardly know what she can do.
