Context

Sept. 20th. Dear Dick: I know you will be thrilled and proud to hear the news of your god-son Daniel Stacey Harris. On Sept. 6th we took him to Culver Military Academy and when we got there were informed that Danny had won one of the Emily Jane Culver scholarships. These are $3000.00 (three thousand) scholarships with $1000.00 credited each year. Only three of such scholarships are given each year and purely on competition and scholastic merit. We certainly were very happy and proud of him. We have had very interesting and amusing letters from him. Yesterday we received one from Col. Jackson his Counselor saying "Daniel has taken things in stride and evidenced both a genuine concern and ready willingness to cooperate." I think Dan told you of friends of ours putting us on the mailing list for a catalog and after Danny had read it, he gave us no peace because that was what he wanted and was sure he could get a scholarship so we tried to meet him half way and wrote for information about scholarship tests. He came out very high and then there was the delay of getting his report from the high school and several reference letters and many other papers filled out. They gave him a $500.00 scholarship at once and then put him in competition for this big one. It is the best scholarship they give. Danny says they (the new class) get nothing but praise and compliments from their faculty. The Col, at the head of the school told them they were the best class in five years. Also much to Danny's pride and joy they were the first class to ever parade after the first week without a mistake. It is a beg sacrifice for us but we believe it was the thing to do and now are very glad we let him go. Our job is to keep letters and I try to send a box of cookies or something every week, which he shares with the other boys. I am sure he would love to hear from you. He likes letters typed if possible as he has so little time to read. Do you ever get a week end free? Can't you come up and see us? Since Dan's return from Wisc., we have been quite busy. First it was get Danny ready and out to Culver and then friends of ours from Scarsdale brought their daughter to Oberlin to enter College and spent most of last week with us. I had open house for Freshman on Friday night and Mother and Dad were here for the week end. This week Dan started his teaching and I believe may have a few interesting new voices. The most interesting perhaps is a little Korean girl with a beautiful voice. He will teach Italian again this year for Conservatory students and of course has the opera class. Please feel free and welcome any time you can make it to Oberlin. Affectionately {Aletha & Dan)
