Context

The First Presbyterian Church 620 W. GENESEE STREET SYRACUSE 4, N.Y. May 28, 1954 Dear Brothers:- Please excuse the carbon copies, but I think it is quite important that we still keep in touch with each other. Our dear Mother who held us so closely together-- her spirit must hold us together now -- so I'm pounding off this epistle to you in the spirit of thankfulness for her wonderful life of love, service and humility. I know we all feel that the funeral service was a high point of faith in our lives and the beautiful passages read, the thoughts expressed, and our taking of her to her resting place all -- these should be inspiring rather than morbid thoughts to us. After all, her two most frequently asked questions have been answered: "When am I going home?" -- "When is Father coming?" I am so grateful that you all were so good to her during her time here. And our wonderful sisters-in-law! Aletha we can never thank you enough for your devotion to her, particularly through the last weeks. I hope that you have had some deserved rest and are feeling much better. Margie, your frequent letters and cards to Mother always meant so much to her and you, too, showed your genuine devotion. Hope you are feeling better these days, I have written letters to Millard Miller, C. M. Bowman, and J. G. Spears thanking them for all they did for us. Also one to Mrs. J. R. King. It would be nice if all of us wrote to Mrs. King. That was a wonderful reunion and it made me wish we were living back in Ohio. When we returned here we found our Church in the middle of the Expansion Fund Drive for $300,000. We lack about $48,000 yet, which we hope to get by next Tuesday. We have sold our house (had to take a loss on the price, but we had 6 years of living in the place). Now we are looking for another place which the Church will buy for us as a second manse. Caroline leaves for Purdue University, Indiana next Monday night to join with 3.000 other Presbyterian Women in a week long conference. Diane took the teenage role in a sound movie which will be shown at this conference -- she was also elected Vice-Moderator of New York Synod youth organization. Suzie loves her piano lessons and will appear in her first recital (and a new dress Mother made for the occasion). Jimmy is going to be tall and slim like his Uncle Dick..... I wake up each morning and find my bed piled with trucks and pistols. Bessie our cocker spaniel will soon be one year old, Mother got such a kick out of those pups! Dick, we certainly enjoyed that delicious dinner at the University with you. Plan to come up to New Hampshire with us when you can. Diane is going - - - - - - - - - - - End of Page 1 - - - - - - - - - - - to be a counselor at a girls' camp near us. Aletha we enjoyed that delicious dinner and visit before we went on to Clyde. Margie, send us the latest pictures of Skipper and Midge--- how we would love to see them. Well, I guess that's all the family news right now. Let's keep our letters coming to each other--- Mother would want it that way. Will let you know as soon as we move. Perhaps we can all have a family reunion in our new manse. Let's also drop an occasional line to Aunt Carrie and Uncle Ott, as well as Uncle Leonards. With lots of love from us all-- to you all! Caroline and Jim Dear Dick: Am writing to the people you suggested. Let us know your plans. We are no grateful for the efficient manner you handled everything. JLH
