Context

[Carbon copy on back of original letter from Elmer E. Ullrich.] 5035 N.W. 5th Ave. Miami Fla. Jan. 4, 1934 Mr E.E.Ullrich Dayton, Ohio Dear Mr Ullrich: Your letter of Dec. 18th came to hand containing check $75 and duplicate slip of deposit for $75. Yes as usual you did it just right. The bank charges me 50¢ for cashing it. This was one time when my good looks did not carry me through. It does seem a little strange to have folk look at you as if they thought by the looks one might be a crook. Well of course that may be expected. I also received your letter of Dec. 27th containing duplicate slip of deposit for $50. Thank you so much. I was surprised but just remembered that Santa Claus had a lot to do this year and could be forgiven for being just a little late. I certainly appreciate what the Seminary is doing and earnestly hope that conditions may improve so that the Institution may come into its own. We have had a great time meeting the elite of the Church. In sending Christmas cards I gave our Miami address so the day after Christmas Bishop and Mrs Batdorf called. Their card had been forwarded to their Miami Address. They arrived here Dec. 21st. The next morning Pres. Lynch and family of Lebanon Valley called. They had gotten trace of us in the same way. Dr Ralph Engle and wife called with Lynches. You may know that Dr Engle is a brother to Ray Engle. Last Sunday morning we heard Bishop Batdorf preach at the First Pres. Church at Coral Gables. Richard met one of his boy friends from the Dayton Y. We have had a good time here but tomorrow morning we start for Gainesville where Richard with be in school. We follow the Tamiami Trail across the Everglades then North to St Petersburg and on up to Gainesville. It about 400 miles. I may get back to Tampa for the Florida Conf. Jan 25–26 but Richard will be entering school about that time. Last evening we attended a band concert at Bay-front Park. People were sitting about in shirt-sleeves as we do North in July. Our address until settled at Gainesville will be General Delivery, Gainesville, Fla. I shall let you know our new address as soon as located. If Richard finds the school work all right I presume we shall remain at Gainesville until June. We have no plans after that. If I had a steady income I think I would want to make this my home but he climate here is their best asset so far as I can see. Doubtless Miami will be a great station in touch with the Central and South American Countries. Possible I told you that Richard and I went on excursion to Key West 156 miles from Miami and 90 miles from Havana, Cuba. It looks rather strange to be plowing through the ocean on a Railway train. One of the bridges is 7 miles long. Of course on the train you cannot see the bridge and nothing appears but water-water. Allow me to thank you again for your kindness in the days gone by and may choice blessings rest upon you. Sincerely, J.H.Harris.
