Dear Bertha & family,
Our love and sympathy is yours.
What a host of fine memories all have of one who was always thinking of others.
Richard must have had Divine guidance to be with you, Bertha. How glad I am you are there Richard.
Yesterday a card came from aunt Ella Hopkins saying Ida was seriously ill and Jordan was caring for her at Nellie's. Today aunt Mattie Zumbro wrote of Joe's passing. Aunt Mattie Z said aunt Mattie Edgerton saw the account in the Ohio State Journal. All yesterday I thought of calling Ira & asking for Ida's address. I said to mother we'd write. We kept talking of you throughout the day. When today the sad news came I immediately called Ira (We have free service to Dresden now) and he told me of being over there and the fact that Richard was with you.
The Christmas card was lovely & the little message very much appreciated, Richard.
Ira said he had just put Ruth to bed (at 10 AM) and he was going himself as soon as he did a few errands. He was very hoarse but persisted in telling me how brave you are Bertha and that you and Richard will stay on until Richard has his Masters.
Dresden people are very fond of your brother & Ruth. Since I lived there for seven years I've many fine friends still there.
Richard couldn't you send a press notice of some sort to the McConnelsville Herald? There are so many folks who'd appreciate knowing about your father also your uncle & aunt.
Mother has had a very severe cold. She coughs as if she had whooping cough. Paul Freman's children have it and the baby one year old died from its effect. Mother may have had sympathetic whooping cough but I really think it was a cold I brought from my substitute teaching.
Mother joins me in love for all and sympathy in your lonely days.
