Context

Miami Fla Jan 10 '35 My Dear Ones: How glad we were to receive your letter and we hope things go happily with you all. The All American Air races are on now the last three days of this week so something is moving here. They claim that Miami leads the nation in development. We sit at tone side and look on or at a little part of it. 10998 deeds were recorded last year- just Xacked tow of 11000, mostly town lots. they are trying to keep prices reasonable they say. It's just wait for land to sell at anything, like it is worth, but it will come surely if Miami keeps growing. I rear Oscar lost heavily in the freeze. I wrote him but he has not answered. We had very light ice flakes on the water but not one continuous piece. Some years ago we had about like window glass but not so thick this time. Hardly touched things at Homestead. We had such nice Papayas and we have grown so fond of them but it took them, seem tender as tomatoes. [End of Page 1] The Russians sold their cow!! They realized it did not pay. Mrs Marshal wrote us to take some roomers to help out. We had a few during Holidays. Neighbors say we might just as well have had it last year but we would not ask for they love this place. A man wanted the place badly, 4 adults, two nice school boys. Said they would give Marshal 400 dollars, us 200 dollars and our board, he would buy all the food and hire a maid and pay her, all this for the season till Apr 1 or a little longer but Marshal was not willing to take it, or maybe to let strangers in. They said a man in N.Y. who had who had seen the place was "crazy" about it too but they could not think of letting him in. Realtor says if he will put in frigidair ice box and better hot water system he can get 1000 dollars a winter for it but Marshals do not care to rent, have not seen it for nearly three years. They are building some houses around here now but not so nice as this. [End of Page 2] There are so many saloons and many accidents. My neighbor said last time she was down town she saw a smashed car, time before two of them. We are so glad you have a nice place among people you enjoy and we believe you will do a good work there. Bertha do not try to do much. We are about as well as common. Love to all, especially Richard whose kind letter I appreciated but can't write much. [End of Page 3]
