Context

[Westerville, OH, to Miss Bertha Lambert, Box 344, City] A.M. 11:45 Dec 27, 1897. In bed at Westerville. Darling Bertha: Your note just received and with it the nice fruit. Many thanks. It's just like you. I had much satisfaction in knowing that you were thinking of me. I am very sorry I did not get to see the folks but I was glad to cling to the bed. I have not sat up 5 minutes at a time since Wed. Have not read any except a few chapters daily in the Bible. The carbuncle is running some now, so I feel better. I think you need not hesitate to come to my room. I keep my door barred all the time except when it is suitable for any one to come in. It is all right with Mrs. Adams. I must have a talk with you before Thurs. Give yourself no uneasiness about notes. We have 18 names for the Volunteer. Do you think you could send them out? Come up whenever you can, Joe. (over) When will your father go away? Perhaps you had better talk with him some whether I see him or not. I presume Ira spoke of the opportunity at Lane etc. I want to talk with you about that too. {J. H. H.}
