Context

1045 Florida Ave. Akron Ohio 10-1-39 Dear Bro Joe and Fafily I will try to write a few lines this beautiful afternoon. We are in our usual health for which we are thankful. Helen is about as usual. She is having quite a good time here as she had a telephone installed a few days past. Margaret and I were at the Bible Conference and came home. Helen was quite a bit excited & said you can't guess who called her. I said Nancy. She said yes. She called and she said she would call once a month now. We are expecting Nancy up some time next month to spend her vacation. We hope nothing will happen to prevent her coming. Nancy certainly has been fine to us. We had a fine time with Cassie this Summer even if she was very busy. The first week she was home Margaret went home as she had not been home for quite a bit over a year. Then she started in on her School work. I did not know any one could work so hard in that line as she did. Her school work ended on Friday evening and Sunday evening she started Eastward to Boston and the Worlds Fair. Was gone a week then when she got home Margaret went home for about three weeks the canning season was on and she filled all the cans we had and then went back to her work. But even tho she was so busy we had a good time together. I don't know, possibly you have (heard) of my misfortune. About the First of March there was a blood vessel bursted in my right eye. The Dr. said was in nearly the same location of the one in my left eye that took place near 40 years ago. We did every thing we could do but my sight is quite seriously injured. I can see to read the lead lines in the paper and when Cassie was at the Worlds Fair she went to the Bible house Exhibit and she ordered Testament and Psalms with print about like the one your boys got for grandmother. I can read from one to three chapters a day in that and I had to give up the job I was working on. There was a part of it that I had to be able to see to read the Labels on the ink cans. The boy who took care of the ink helped me out when I needed help, but he quit to go to school and then I had to tell the Co. the shape I was in. I made a mistake on Monday so I told my foreman I wanted to talk with him and the manager in the office. He was very much surprised and as soon as he found the manager in his office he called me and we went in and I told them all. Told them they could lay me off or place me some place else or do what they liked but I could not see to get that ink. They said there was only one place they could give me and that was the laundry. Said I could try that and if I could do the work they would be glad to give me the place. So have been there for the past month. So far as I know am getting along all right there. The wages is 4 cts less per hour and the work will not be so steady but feel that have much to be thankful for. Feel that was very fortunate that I got the place I did and that my sight good as it is. Glad that I have been able to find a Testament that I can read. At times it is quite hard to read it and at other times can read it very well. Any one a little ways from me looks black as a colored man. We were sorry to hear that Bertha was having the trouble with her eyes she is having. We would be glad to hear how she is getting. Margaret reads all the letters I write and reads all the letters I receive. So you see have no secrets. May God's choicest blessings rest on you and your family. F W Harris
