Context

[Plantsville, OH, to Miss Bertha Lambert, Westerville, Ohio, “Franklin Co.”] Plantsville, Ohio. June 25, 1896. Bertha E. Lambert, Westerville, Ohio. Darling Bertha: Your message came to hand last evening and of course it is useless to mention the effect. I scarcely know sometimes whether I am dreaming or whether my stay here is real. I came home last Friday, visited Alice in the afternoon, spent the evening at home, went to Lathrop on Sat. Almost all the remaining time I have been with cousin Alice (this is now Friday June 26). I am surprised to know that she has lived so long, as she has strangling spells once in a while. Everybody is busy in harvest and as they are particular about who they have to wait on Alice I seem to be the only one available at present as it is necessary to have one man to lift her. I have not had my clothes off since last Sat. morning. I ought to be at work but don't see how I can leave them as they are. Uncle Wm & Wats are both unable to lift Alice. I have done nothing with the Studies this wk. I got a copy in Old Testament. I think it is fine. I will tell you something of my plan of canvassing as soon as I have time to write. Alice is perfectly resigned and talks of her decease as composedly as though she were going away for a day's visit. As soon as I get through here I will get more Studies on hand and will perhaps go back to Athens. I think you may address another letter here. I believe you have been teasing some one as your letter has such a playful tone about it. Your letter did me so much good as there is of course an air of seriousness here that makes one feel rather sad all the time. I have very poor opportunities for writing now so I believe I shall postpone writing until I have more time. I would like so much to visit you and think I shall when I get over to Athens. A visit with you now would be a grand treat for me. As last Sab. was qr. meeting at Bartlett they had no church at Hermon so I have not been to church for a long time here. I am so sleepy these lines want to run together so I shall say good bye to my Sweetheart and trust that I may visit you soon. Hoping this may find my “Love” enjoying life in a high degree I remain devotedly Your Lover J. H. Harris.
