July 15, 1897.
Miss Lambert,
Westerville, O.,
My Darling Bertha: This A.M. finds me feeling first rate. Felon has broken and is doing nicely. When I wrote last I would write a line or two and then pace the room, so no wonder I forgot to introduce my letter and tell you where to address me. I don't know where you are but you are thinking of me all the same. Your letter will be forwarded from Athens but it takes two days for mail from Athens. Leonard, Seth and Howard are home at present. Emma Galbraith is living here now, so we have quite a jolly time.
I stay at home all the time. I hope to hear from you this P.M. I look across these hills toward Plantsville and then at the church and school house and of course old memories come flooding in that my left hand is too slow to relate.
You may smile at my paper and the strange marks but they are genuine and are mine sure and English language too, but somewhat crippled. I hope you can read it.
I dare say nothing about school for this fall at present, but all will be well. We will keep good courage and trust that all may come out well. I wish I might be with you and I expect to be, the first opportunity I get, you may address me here.
I am having a nice visit. Yesterday was my birthday and it stirs me to think how old I am and so little done, but you know how that is. Thanks for the Aegis. They have 4 mules and 4 horses here so I may buggy ride some if I can find a girl. If you think of coming down this summer come soon and we will service old memories. I would like to say more but it is tedious writing and will be difficult for you to read. It is dinner time and Leonard goes to office after dinner. I want to ask many things about Geneva, but will leave that for later date. I hope you are well and happy.
Your Lover,
J. H. Harris
