Context

Sun., Dec. 8, 1991 Holiday Greetings! Once again our thoughts turn to the birth of our Savior and to those who are so dear to us. We have been busy, happy and very mindful of the blessings which have been bestowed on us and our loved ones. We started the New Year with a quiet evening at home with some of our friends. In March, I (Cathy), drove to El Paso, TX with Anne Nichols to spend 10 days with her parents who are good friends of ours. We came back the week of Easter. The week after Easter on Thursday our little Thomas woke up and was unable to walk. He had no sense of balance or coordination. After several days of tests for all sorts of very scary things he was diagnosed as having encephalitis. He was given Prednisone for 10 days and the symptoms subsided rapidly. He remains symptom free. He is a very active, very bright, very lovable little boy. Thank God! He will be 3 in February. We celebrated a couple of milestones in Aug. On the 2nd we had a surprise party for the BIG 60 for Wencl. Really pulled it off, too. He didn't tumble. The 3rd found us at my 40th high school class reunion. How I enjoyed seeing so many friends - classmates and faculty. Wencl finished our den in September. I made the drapes and on Sept. 18 I was on a ladder hanging them, caught my foot in some of the material, fell and broke the ends off both bones in the tibial plateau of my left leg (just below the knee). It was a very bad break - I was in surgery over 4-1/2 hrs., in the hospital 6 days, and since returning home, have headquartered back in the den (the scene of the crime) in a rented hospital bed. In 2 days (Tues. the 10th) I get the cast off and start putting weight on it! When the Dr. said 3 months it seemed like such a long time, but actually it has gone fast, all things considered. Wencl is an excellent nurse and has been great & Dan & Lori were right here whenever we needed them, too. We are looking forward to celebrating a very happy Christmas. Our love to you and yours, happy holidays and may your new year be truly blessed. Wencl & Cathy [handwritten on back] We have been thinking of you a lot since we heard of the demise of Midway. I've talked to Doris several times & she said you aren't sure what you will do. I know it's a worry & we will hope & pray that everything will work out for you & P. J. & Abbie. Hope to see you next summer - sooner if you should happen to get near Garner.
