Context

[No envelope] 8:45 A.M. Chicago Ill. July 2, '97. Mr. J. H. Harris Athens O. My Darling Joe: — I am here safe and sound but am somewhat tired. Somehow I did not like my bed very well last night, but however slept better than I expected to. I rec'd your letter yesterday morning and had intended writing then but was so hurried I could not. Lucy came with me to Columbus where we did some shopping. I left Columbus at 6 P.M. and arrived here at 7 this morning. My eyes have stood the trip remarkably well. I believe they feel better than when I left home. As the train pulled out of Columbus last evening I felt that you were praying for me and I just gave myself into God's hands and know he has watched over me and helped me. Last evening I watched the country as long as I could see and then tried to sleep but did not make much of a success at it until after midnight. At 3 o'clock I awoke and we were passing along a beautiful lake in Ind. It was lovely to see the dawn spread over the waters. Later we traveled for about fifteen miles along by the side of Lake Michigan. Who can describe the feeling inspired by such a vast body of water. It is beyond description for my weak powers. Such as I have seen of Chicago it is the dirtiest meanest looking place I was ever in, but I hope to see some of the better parts (if there are any) before I return home. If I can get the time extended (and I think I can) on my permits I expect to visit Uncle Jesse and Uncle Merrick before I return. I am so glad you are standing your work so well. I was so much afraid that you would get sick going at such hard work. Now please pray for me that I may be especially near to God during this conference, and that it may be a great and lasting benefit to my spiritual life. I am now at the Chicago and North Western depot and will leave for Williams Bay about 1 P.M. At Williams Bay we take a steamer and get to Lake Geneva about 4 P.M. For your benefit I wish to say that I feel a great deal better than when I last wrote and think when I get home I will be as fat as a China pig. Now pray for me that I may be led and guided by the Holy Spirit. Loving you as ever I remain your true one. Bertha E. Lambert. Address me Miss Bertha E. Lambert Care Y.M.C.A. Camp. Lake Geneva Wis.
