Context

[Westerville, OH, to Mr. J. H. Harris, Ada, Ohio, Lock Box 28] Westerville O., Mch. 1, '96. Mr. J. H. Harris, Ada O. My Dear Joe: — At the close of another day I come to spend an hour with you. I believe winter has come back, but if the old saying is true we will have some warm weather after a little. I was glad to know that you landed at Ada safe and had enjoyed the con. Ira does not get through talking about it. Ira said you did not ask about me but said you were coming down soon so I thought you had not forgotten me entirely. Today was quarterly meeting. It was one of the best I ever attended. Four united with the church. This afternoon I attended a service held for all students expecting to enter the ministry or any other special line of Christian work. There were about fifty present. Dr. Sanders gave an excellent address on “The Idea Minister.” How much such a band ought to accomplish for Christ if they would only improve every opportunity. We held Y.W.C.A. services every evening last week. One girl was brought to seek Christ and the meetings were such a help to all of us. I surely never attended better services. I do hope that I may get where I will not have to expend all my energies to simply live a Christian but that I may be able to live trusting through faith and use my powers for the benefit of others. Miss Fox and I had a prayer meeting with Mrs. Bishop Edwards at 4 P.M. She is surely a jewel only waiting for God to call her. She said “I am seventy-nine and almost home.” I assure you I never knew the beauties in doing work of that kind until I tried it of late, and every time I have visited a home in this way God has so wonderfully blessed me that I can not help but love the work. O, I think sometimes that I must be a very strange being. I do not know myself, but I am so glad that God is helping me to see myself more & more each day. I want to be so fully his that I may know His will in every plan of my life. I was sorry to learn of Mr. Fisher's sickness but I know he has a good nurse and hope he will soon be well again. I hope you will not have the measles again. Carrie thinks perhaps they are just a new style and they will not affect you. I rec'd a letter from Miss Chandler yesterday. She sends her regards to you, also to Mr. Fisher (you can deliver them if you like). She is teaching and seems to be getting along nicely. I wish to thank you for sending those books. I recognize one as the one presented to you at Northfield. I want to read them as soon as possible. It seems that I have done scarcely any reading this term. I do not believe I spent a dozen evenings at home this term except the week I was sick. Of course the services did not last long but it would take a part of the evening. I will hardly know what to do with myself since the meetings have closed. I am now making use of your Latin Caesar. We are reading some parts of the book — the hardest I think? Please do not allow me to make any change in the time for your visit. If you wish to leave it until the end of the term I think we will have a day or two vacation then. I am so glad to hear that Seth is in school. Please continue to pray for me that I may be all of Christ and none of myself. I am still Your loved One Bertha.
