Dear Dick:
We have just received this letter from Caroline. Please give it the once over and send it back to us. She had telephoned me after writing the letter, to tell me about the death of Daniel Ira Mayne. The funeral was last Friday. We were unable to go to Rochester as I had a program that night.
We have just finished the Teachers Performance Institute, aided by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. There were ninety singers, and about the same number of instrumentalists here for a month. Several conductors worked with the major groups, and about a half a dozen of us worked with small ensemble groups. We did Hindemith's short opera "Hin und zurtick" (There and Back) last Friday night. The large groups presented very ambitious programs at the end of each week. A great deal was accomplished, but I think we can do better next year.
Aletha and I had a very pleasant experience at Meadow Brook, at Rochester, Michigan, just north of Detroit a couple of weeks ago. Jane Marsh sang with the Detroit Symphony, and the College asked us to go up to represent the conservatory at a reception afterwards. She sang beautifully and was very nice to us. We stayed overnight at the Dearborn Inn.
Thursday of this week I am going up again to see the Meadow Brook School of Music in action. I plan to hear Haydn's "Lord Nelson Mass" and Stravinsky's "Oedipus Rex" that night. The next week I shall be in East Lansing to attend a Workshop of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Then on the 14th Aletha and I hope to go to Chautauqua to hear a performance of Verdi's "Falstaff", which we plan to present here Nov. 16 and 18.
If you are free sometime after the 15th of August we would be happy to have you come up for a visit. Let us know as soon as possible.
John is working up at Cedar Point again this summer. We see him about once a week. Dan and the children were out last Saturday. Nana is still going strong. She celebrated her 91st birthday July 22.
All good wishes from your devoted
Dan
