Context

May 14, 1961 Dear Dad, I hope his gets to you in time for your birthday. I almost forgot it. Enclosed is a card. We had a pair of wood thrushes (birds) in the back yard, but last last [sic] night Smokey that pig persian [sic] cat came along and killed one or both, anyway they aren't around anymore. They had the prettiest song. Almost like that of a canary. I shot him in the side with my slingshot and phoned Blanchards & told them. Barby Blanchard said that he had been a little sick lately and that about 3 yrs ago he went on a killing spree & acted about the same as he does now. They were very understanding. They like songbirds, too. If he comes back to get the others (birds) I'll kill him if I catch him. We have 2 pairs of Cardinals & a pair of catbird along with a couple of doves & a dozen robins. Of course we have sparrows & blackbirds. My robin egg hasn't hatched yet, but it will, I hope. I have Jimmy Hall's lawn to do. It wasn't mowed for about a month so I almost did it twice. Boy the new mower whized [sic] right through it. In some places the grass was about 6" & up & it was wet in a few places. I made about $10.00 Sat. Friday nite [sic] I mowed most of Hall's lawn Sat. I finished Hall's & mowed Turners, Carrs, & our yard, washed the side porch, brought down the porch furniture & did my paper route. Oh, I watched most of the ball game. The Indians lost to Baltimore 4-1. Cleveland is in 3rd or 4th place. Johnny Temple has batted .400 until this week when he broke a 20 game hitting streak. Today the Indians won the 1st game of a double-header 1-0 in the 15th inning Perry worked 8 innings & a rookie, Frank Funk went the next 7. The second game went into extra innings but I'll tell you what the score was when it comes over the radio. The first game started around 1:30 & the second game got over at 9:30 approx. So says WEOL. Cleveland won the 2nd game 6-4 extra innings. Uncle Jack & Auntie Marge, Uncle [Ford?] & Auntie Peg, & everyone else who lives at 276 Forest was celebrating Mother's Day. I gave mom 5.00 for her birthday & your $5.00 to her today since we didn't go out for lunch. I'm going to attempt to make wild flower garden in the back yard under the bushey [sic] tree. Also - I found a maple tree about 6'-7' high in the back hedge. Can you think of a place to put it. Theres [sic] also a 3'-4' maple right next to the south east corner of the house. Have to run now. Love John
