CAMP KERN
(Fort Ancient, Ohio)
P.O., Lebanon, Ohio
July 22, 1930.
Dear Dick:-
I received the big gamily "triple-header" and it was enjoyed very much. Mail is about the only thing a fellow looks forward to down here when things are going as usual.
Your surely did a dandy job on that flute. When I played it, I was very much surprised at the ease of blowing and that even the low C was very clear. You ought to hear our orchestra. We have 10 pieces in it now with both leaders and campers playing. Last night at campfire we played several numbers. We have 2 violins (will have 3 soon) cornet, trombone, flute, piccolo, clarinet, banjo, bass drum and traps and piano..
I was talking with Mr. Roehm this afternoon and asked him if you could get off work and come down Saturday evening with Keck and Bakeman. He would like very much for you to come down and of course I would too. You would really enjoy it. Mr. Roehm says you can get some one to take your place and come with Keck and Bakeman. I want you to come this week bercause we take our hike to Fort Ancient Satuday [sic] evening and you would have a dandy time. I can fix an extra bunk in my lodge and you can stay over till Monday morning or Sunday evening which ever you desire. The camp truck can take you to Lebanon where you can get a bus to Dayton. Your meals will be free and bring some hiking clothes. I hope that you can come down as it will make a nice outing for you, and you can meet quite a few of the boys' parents parents on Sunday. I hope that dad and mother can get down on Sunday if possible. There [sic] meals will be taken care of. Perhaps Rev. Dennis will drive down Sunday as he has a boy here in the camp. You had better not risk the Dodge on the big hill.
The boating has surely been fine this year. I have rowed at least an hour a day and it surely developes you. It would be nice if you could work here during the summer while in college.
Who are these two queenies that you were talking about? Give me one of them, you don't need two!
I suppose you know that I sing for Keck's wedding on August 19th. Poor boy, he's so excited!
Well, It's about time for campfire in the council ring so I must stop. I'll be looking for you. Let the two flames rest one week end.
Dad's birthday party surely sounded great. I wished I could have been there. Pres. and Mrs. Clippinger were down here the other night and staid overnight.
Now, forget everything else and come down Saturday.
Your brother
Jimmie.
PS. Our minstrel show surely went off great. The colored cook here who traveled with minstrel shows for 15 years spoke very highly of it.
