Context

Okmulgee, Okla. June 18, 1931. W. O. Lambert Dear Cousin: I assume before this letter reaches you that you have been informed by Ida the movement on to bring together the Lambert Genealogy - Bertha as Editor, all the rest to help. I am sending to you my contribution for two reasons; one, I am not sure of Bertha's address, and the other, I want you to look over my records that may help you in what you have. These are from the papers I have in my possession of Grandmother Lambert and from the Stanton ancestors. You will please forward these to Ida and such as you have, especially back in England. As we are far separated and so disconnected, it may take some time to fully determine what we want and how extensive we go in this matter, but it seems to me first of all we should build the Lambert Tree to date, then add the story of our people by incidents, achievements, etc. Like to have your idea on this. I have already asked Cala Lambert to get all their records to Bertha. Carrie and I are at home now rebuilding from our accident in Mississippi, otherwise all are well here. Your cousin, Oscar A. Lambert. [End of Page 1] STANTON GENEALOGY ROBERT STANTON: The oldest member of our Grandmother Lambert's family on her paternal side was born in England in the year 1599. He married a woman by the name of Avis, her maiden name not known. To this union a son was born named Robert in the year 1627. It was about this time that Robert and Avis and family came to America. Boylie's History of New Plymouth names Robert Stanton as among the earliest settlers there. Robert Stanton was one of the signers of the Compact for farming they Colony. George Fox began to preach in the year 1643. In the years 1655-1656 the first Friends began to arrive in America from England and persecution began. Mary Stanton, a young woman from Rhode Island, quite young at the time, was whipped in Massachusetts in 1658 for being a Quaker. Robert and Avis Stanton had a daughter at this time named Mary, 16 years old, living in this territory. It was doubtless this one that was persecuted. Whether Robert joined the Society of Friends is not known, but he appears to have sought religious freedom in coming from Massachusetts to more liberal Rhode Island. Records of Friends meeting at Newport, Rhode Island mentions John, son of Robert and Avis, as an early member. CHILDREN OF ROBERT AND AVIS STANTON *Robert - born 1627 In England. Sarah - born 1640 Mary - born 1642 John - born 1645 In Newport, Rhode Island. [End of Page 2] *JOHN STANTON Son of Robert and Avis Stanton, born at Newport, Rhode Island, year 1645. He married Mary Horndale, his first wife, in 1667, in Friends Meeting. John Cranston, of Rhode Island. By this union there was born a son in Newport, Rhode Island, fifth month, twenty-second 1688. They named him *Henry. John Stanton was a prominent man in the affairs of his day in Newport. He died there October 3, 1713. [End of Page 3] *HENRY STANTON, SEN. Henry Stanton, son of John Stanton and Mary (Clarke) Cranston, was born at Newport, Rhode Island (Fifth month twenty-second day 1688) May 22, 1688. He was married to his first wife, Mary Hull, in Rhode Island May 22, 1707 by Edward Thurston, a Justic Peace. He moved to Carteret Co., North Carolina, between 1721 and 1724 and there in later years he married as his second wife, Lydia Albertson. Legal records of Carteret Co., North Carolina, disclose that Henry Stanton bought from Joshua Porter and his wife 1992 A. land 4-8-1721, also records there show that Henry bought several large tracts of land and also sold several tracts, one of the last was tracts he sold "Henry Stanton to Isaac White 150 A. on N. side Newport River 11-7-1751." Isaac White married his daughter Catherine. Another legal shows that *Henry Stanton, Jr., Executor to Henry Stanton, Sen. sold to Henry Chew 640 A. on N side Newport River 3-7-1753. So Henry Stanton, Sen. must have died a year or so previous to that date. - - - - - From Minutes of Core Sound Monthly Meeting 8-1-1733. Core Sound Meeting organized, monthly meeting every first third day in the month successfully for time to come, and that these meetings shall be kept at the of Henry Stanton till the meeting is ordered elsewhere. In 1742 Henry Stanton and wife Mary given certificate to visit friends in the other country. [Probably county] In 1742 Henry Stanton, Senior, appointed clerk of the monthly meeting. Record 7-3-1745. Henry Stanton, Sen. and Lydia Albertson laid their intentions before the meeting of marriage. In 1746 Henry Stanton, Sen. and Henry Stanton, Jr. signed the marriage certificate of John and Elizabeth Small. In year 1751 Henry Stanton, Sen. lays plan before meeting to visit Rhode Island. The record shows that 9-10-1752 Henry Stanton gives up his plan to visit Rhode Island. As he died about that time, it is presumed due to failing health. [End of Page 4] THE HENRY STANTON, SEN. FAMILY and MARY HILL STANTON Mary - born 1708 Died in infancy Alice - born 1709 Mary - born 1712 Catherine - born 1713 Married Isaac White Hannah - born 1716 *Henry, Jr. - born 1719 Joseph - born 1724 THE HENRY STANTON, SEN. FAMILY BY SECOND WIFE - LYDIA ALBERTSON Benjamin) ) Sarah ) ) Died at Beaufort, North Carolina. Avis ) ) John ) Henry Stanton, Sr., Henry Stanton, Jr., Benjamin, Joseph and John Howard Stanton were ministers of the Society of Friends. {End of Page 5] *HENRY STANTON Jr. Was the sixth child of Henry Stanton and Mary (Clark) Stanton, born at Newport, in the year 1719. This was Grandmother Lambert's grandfather on her father's side. He was a minister in the Friends Church. His wife was Hope Borden. The records of Carteret Co., North Carolina show that in 1754 Benjamin Borden deeded 300 A. land to Henry Stanton, Jr. and wife Hope Stanton. Later, in the year 1779 Hope Stanton sold one-half of this 300 A. which was mentioned as part of her father's land. The records show several transactions in land to the year 1777 when Hope Stanton, widow and sole executrix of Henry Stanton, Jr., deceased, sold tracts of land, saw mill, grist mill and mill race to Robert Williams. Abstract of Minutes of Core Sound Monthly Meeting. In 1754 Henry and Hope Stanton sign a wedding certificate. In year 1760 Hope, Joseph and Henry Stanton appear as witness on marriage certificate. In 1762 Joseph, Henry, Mirian and Hope sign papers. In 1764 Henry Stanton requests a certificate to visit Rhode Island. Again in the year 1768 Henry and Joseph appear in records. In year 1781 Henry Stanton, son of Henry, being about to move to Contentney, request a certificate. The records indicate that some months later in the year 1782 Henry Stanton died. Some time prior to this the name of Joseph Stanton does not appear on the records of the Core Sound Monthly Meeting. It must have been that he moved away, perhaps to join the Friends in the new settlement in Ohio. CHILDREN OF HENRY STANTON (By First wife named Catherine, two children, Alice and Catherine ) (Then he married Hope Borden and born by this union 13 children - ) (Joseph and Daniel, twins, David, Mary, Anna and Peasley, all of ) (whom died young. Then came Hope, Ruth, William, Benjamin Borden, ) Joseph and Abigal, who lived.) In brackets is copied from Grandmother Lambert's record. All records previous are taken from "Book of Ancestors, Stanton Familey". [End of Page 6} *JOSEPH STANTON Date of birth unknown, or not shown in my record. He married Hannah Bundy in the year 1794, ninth month, fourteenth day. He was a son of Henry Stanton, Jr. and his mother was Hope Borden Stanton. He was a minister in the Friends Church. Before coming to Ohio, was active, as the records show in Core Sound Friends Church or Meeting. I have a letter written by him in the year 1799 to his brother and sister Benjamin Steele. His children were as follows: Hope Stanton, May 29, 1795 Joshua Stanton, February 26, 1979 Elizabeth Stanton, October 19, 1798 Peniah Stanton, May 25, 1801 Deaths Hope died May 26, 1798. Joseph Stanton died the first month, first day, 1801, leaving Hannah Bundy Stanton a widow with the two young girls, Elizabeth and Peniah. Joshua died 1798, first month, sixth day. Joseph Stanton and Hannah Bundy were married at Trenton, Jones Co., North Carolina. No doubt the Quarterly Meeting Records there would give details of publish intentions and witness to marriage certificate. I shall not try to carry Grandmother's Genealogy further. This, so far, may not be absolutely correct regarding dates, but given from such data I have on her paternal side (Stanton's) I have in my possession her Testament with records, also two or more record books written in her hand, also a book or diary of the first yearly meetings in Ohio, from 1812 to 16, and a letter written when a girl to a girl friend. You may have in your possession all this (copies) and more. If any of this you will need not given here I will cheerfully supply it. O. A. Lambert.
