Dear Paul,
It is past time for me to send comments on the enclosures with your letter of Jan 5. Please excuse my handwriting, which is easier for me.
The autobiographies are great to have in this form. I quoted some of the same writings in my book, as you remember. But I did not have these from Aunt Bertha. Her beautiful recollections and stories really help to round out the picture of that community and the various family members in and around Mt. Herman Church and the Rardin School, which my mother spoke about so often. For possible changes: In Chap. 10, second line, I think she meant to say, "... meat on the table." Now I know why I still use sorghum molasses! Chap. 11 she mentions the marriage of Ida and Jordan and that Sam Selby was there with candy. I was hoping she would recall the marriage of Mary Eva and Sam Selby two years later. Did you find anywhere she mentioned that occasion on Dec. 28, 1881? In Chap. 14, first line, fifth word, she must

have meant to say "nine." Are there more than these 26 Chapters? The title page note sounds as if there may have been more.
I enclose several pages of the family group records on which I have suggested additions and changes. For those who might be confused with the City of Athens I think it would help to mention where the homes were from Mt. Herman Church.
Now that I am beginning to feel more at home in Thomas House, I am also making plans for some corrective surgery in my prostate region. I'm scheduled to have the work done in G. W. Hospital on Feb. 20 and may be there the rest of that week: then take things easy around here for three or four weeks after that — just something that every older man seems to need at some point.
I hope you received the various items I sent to you about Jan. 12.
Thanks so much for all the many charts you sent.
Sincerely,
{Malcolm}

Daniel Webster Lambert of Ohio and some of his Descendants
By Malcolm Lambert Smith
A Lambert family line extending back to John Lambert (1715-1772) and his wife Elizabeth Sayre (1716-1760), who lived at Elizabethtown, New Jersey, was described by cousin Bette Lambert Knapp in the July 1976 Lambert Newsletter. Her charts showed that the 2nd Abner Lambert (1749-1833) became a Quaker in 1782 in North Carolina and that he and his second wife, Winifred Cartwright, were part of the Trent Monthly Meeting when it closed and moved to Ohio in 1800. Their son, Abner, Jr., (1790-1850) married Elizabeth Stanton who had also migrated from North Carolina with her parents. They were such staunch Quakers that three of their children were given names of famous Quaker leaders (Barclay, Chalkley and Elwood). Other of their sons were Reece Benjamin Lambert, the great grandfather of Bette Lambert Knapp; and Daniel Webster Lambert, the great grand-father of this writer.
Daniel Webster Lambert (1837-1918), shown in chart I, married Deborah Vernon Embree (1840-1921). They were both born in Athens county, OH, as were their ten children. Daniel developed skills as a stone cutter but was soon led into the ministry of the United Brethern Church, serving for more than forty years as an active itinerant minister in the Ohio Southeast conference. Later the family moved to Westerville, OH, where many of them attended Otterbein College. Several of these Lamberts were ministers or married ministers or missionaries.
Their second child, Mary Eva Lambert (1861-1914) married Samuel V. Selby, a farmer on the Selby family farm below Mt. Hermon Church, Athens county, OH. Chart II shows the five children born to them there; Grace May, their oldest child, was often in her Lambert grandparents home as a child and carried the Lambert relatives in her fondest recollections through life, naming a son Daniel Lambert. This Selby family later moved to an improved farm by the Ohio river near Haverhill, OH.
As chart III indicates, Grace married Lindley M. Smith and they lived briefly in North Carolina before settling in Illinois. As an assistant state entomologist he traveled widely while living at Carbondale, IL; then when his early orchards began to bear they moved to the fruit farm at Ozark, IL. There they raised the family of eight boys and two girls while both parents were active in programs of the Cooperative Extension Service and other community, region and state activities. My book, Working with People, Bugs and Apples, An Old Fashioned Family, L.M. and Grace Smith, Parents of Ten, is the story of their lives. It relates the family to ancestors who ware in ten of the original colonies, most coming from Great Britain, showing ancestry to families of Anders, Brainerd, Bundy, Bunting, Calhoun, Clarke, Coffin, Cone, Doan, Embree, Farquhar, Hodgin, Humphrey, Kirk, Laing, Lambert, Lundy, Maddock, Mears, Rardin, Roberts, Sayre, Selby, Shotwell, Smith, Spencer, Stanton, Starbuck, Stubbs, Talbott, Vernon, Willets, Williams and numerous others. It contains pictures, charts, references, appendix and indexes; 444 pages in hardback, printed by Adams Press, Chicago and available from Malcolm Lambert Smith, P.O. Box 6712, Washington, DC 20020.
