Context

Daniel A. Harris 5840 S. W. 48th St. Miami, Florida 33155 January 1, 1979 Dear Dick: I didn't have your address with me when I was at Dan's on Long Island, from Dec. 20 to Dec. 30, so I'll try to bring you up to date now. I drove over to Ft. Myers Sunday Dec. 31, and came back this afternoon. Eva and Nana are doing quite well. Dan and Donna and the children made me feel quite at home, and John and his fiancee brought Zack over from Connecticut on Christmas day. We had a great time together. Of course I cannot help thinking of how Aletha would have enjoyed it. I have some excellent pictures, taken in October, and I'll have one enlarged and send it on to you. Thank you for your check. Many checks have come into the church. However, I suggest that yours be given to the University Civic Chorale, along with several other checks, including my own, to be used for the purchase of new vocal scores of the Brahms Requiem, which they are doing this spring. And here's why. When I attended their Christmas program, my neighbor in the next seat called my attention to the heading of the program "This program is presented as a memorial to Aletha Harris". I hope you like the idea of your contribution being used for a musical memorial. The memorial service on Sunday, Nov. 27, [was 26th] was held at the Coral Gables Congregational Church and was very simple. About 150 people attended. No flowers, - just an enormous bouquet of pink roses which we had ordered, but which the ladies of Aletha's church circle insisted on paying for. Dan and Danny and John had flown down for the service. We had both requested cremation, and her ashes were scattered by the minister in the Memorial Garden of the church. Needles to say, I miss Aletha more than I can say. We had a very interesting and happy life together, and I am very fortunate to have shared so many years with such a generous and beautiful soul. I appreciate your putting the notice in the Columbus and Cleveland papers. I shall continue to live in Miami, where I have work to do and friends who can help. All good wishes for a healthy and happy New Year, Dick. Do keep in touch. With much love, Dan
