Dear Ones:
Up at 7:00, had breakfast cantaloupe, toast & coffee 25¢. It would cost 60 to 75¢ on train. Since I am here two days I sent shirts, collars & handkerchiefs to laundry and last night I washed my underwear and sox, so I will get along in good shape. Hoffman wrote to try to meet then in Chicago, but it is doubtful. You perhaps read of the terrific storm in S. Iowa Monday. Kas had a dust storm in the morning and at Wichita later 4½ or more inches of rain. 3 people were killed in the Iowa storm. Our train came through there that night. Papers are full of what they call the farmers' war and it is the subject of conversation in the hotel. 2 men had a heated argument in the lobby of the hotel this morning.
On the St one man told another that Hoover is buying up all the fodder & hay in the West, “Yes” the other retorted “to feed his jackasses out West.” I want to run out to the State House this morning. Conf. begins at 1:30.
This is a beautiful cool morning. I saw a man drunk on the St last night, the first I have seen on this trip. This (5th Ave) is a very busy St. They have some very nice stores and plenty of bargains.
So far as I know this trip will end my confs unless Pa conf. asks me to come there.
I must make my charts for this & Wis. Confs. I will have no time to do such work at Wis.
I had a splendid night's rest despite the noise. One has so much more freedom in a hotel than is a home and can do twice the work.
I was really glad when I learned that there would be no criticism on going to hotel.
Love to all
Dad
