Dear Joe: - While the rain continues its “pitter-patter” I gladly improve a few moments in reply to your welcome letter just read the second time. I believe you have described my feelings on your departure better than I can express them, but it seemed that I did not realize myself as myself until I arrived in Athens Co. once more. After you left on Tues. morning I made three fashionable? calls in the forenoon, including one on Mr. Bushnell, but we left off the usual greeting. In the afternoon I went to the dentist's office where I sat for three hrs. in the embraces of Dr. Custer, and in the evening rec'd three callers. Wed. morning I went to chapel and then hurried home to pack my valise and bid good-bye to the loved ones. Although I was always a lover of home I must say that I have learned to appreciate it in a truer sense. I have also learned that no matter how dear it may be we must not let our love for it destroy our work of usefulness in life.
We left on the 10:36 train as we had some shopping in Columbus. We left Columbus about three and arrived at Sharpsburg about 7, where we found Alva waiting with the sled. I must confess I have had to work pretty hard to keep off homesickness, loneliness, but I will find plenty to take up my mind now. I was at Hermon today and think I am rather getting ahead for I rec'd several congratulations. I heard your father was sick but think he must be better for Howard was at church.
I am sorry I must bring this to a close but want to send it with Alva and will write again soon. The snow is going off with a rain today.
May God's choicest blessings rest upon you is the sincere wish of your friend.
Bertha
