Dear Dick:
Many thanks for your letter of March 5, with the news of Johnny Mayne's funeral. This morning we had a note from Anne, with further details. I'm glad you found out about it, and were able to be present to represent the family. As you know, John and I were very close during college years. It was he who took me in to try out for the Glee Club, and you have mentioned a lot of other things that we shared. I had forgotten that he was three years older than I am. (Incidentally, when were you born, 1910?)

You mentioned Aunt Hannah's family. The husband was Calvin, who died before John was born. The children were Horace, Helen, Dwight, Daniel Ira, and John. She was a remarkable woman.
I am enclosing a check to help you with any expenses you may have had in connection with the funeral. Maybe there will be enough left over for your to go out to dinner on your birthday. We are so glad you are feeling better, and we certainly appreciated your letter. Aletha sends her love along with mine.
