Context

Miami Fla Mch 21 '34. My Dear Dear Ones; Yours just rec'd and enjoyed so much so will begin a letter to you. Yes we so much enjoy the memories of our visit — some one says "our memories are all we keep." And there was room and quiet for a visit then. Over 80600 (80623) persons went bathing at the east end of 79 street (where you went) during the first 18 days of March. Not so much fun to bathe with some 4500 people or more, on good days, cluttering up the beach. They are calling for more life guards this morning. Hastings has been the potato patch but they say now our county will be. Paper says the have 4000 acres this year and 6000 a of tomatoes. The tomato men expect to make about a million and a third tho they shipped 200 car loads north that arrive of there tome of worst cold. Boys in the second house west planted potatoes. Cost 100 dollars fertilizer an acre and they worked hard but lost. When seasons and other things were favorable I think the Ohio company made about 1000 an acre at South Allepattah Gardens, one year. Boys west of us are going to plant cucumbers and cabbage now to try to regain their losses. Mrs Humphrey was able to rent her cabin the day she left for 25 dollars a month. [End of Page 1] She is getting 45 a month for the front house, and over 100 for teaching they pay teachers 12 months in the year here. I think she will go to visit her father when school is out. Still here. Father in N.Y. her renters will likely go north soon. Considerable selling now and building. One new 200 room hotel on the Beach about 400 000. Another not so large announced this morning Coral Gables selling more lots than any other place here it is likely. Nothing satisfactory for us yet, it seems. Cash says wait awhile if we can. Give away prices now. We had a letter from Eva and she thinks Addison a little better but if they try to take him north they must take him on a stretcher in a drawing room car with a nurse. How sorry I am. Marshalls have had such hard winter. He did want to come so bad but could not. Doing so much better in business but such sickness. Boy took scarlet fever about Thanksgiving in Hospital now I think. Girl appendicitis. Several of their friends came but were able to find rooms at hotel. How some of them did enjoy this home, right out of those N. Y. storms and cold did not stay here. Some of them may want our place here next year. Thank you for telling of your plans or hopes. We are all interested and able to do little, but I am sure there will be a way. Nearly as well as when you were here. So much love. Thank you again for good letter. {Ida} [End of Page 2] [Envelope] 8812 N E 10th Ave. Miami, Fla Post Marked Mar22., 6-PM, 1934, MIAMI, FLA 1 Mr and Mrs J. H. Harris 920 E.
