Context

[Iberia, OH, to Mr. J. H. Harris, Marquand Hall, East Northfield, Mass.] 9:35 P.M. Iberia O., June 30, 1895. Mr. J. H. Harris Northfield Mass. Dear Joe: — At the close of this pleasant Sabbath I come to spend a short time in expressing the thoughts which have been seeking freedom for the past few days. Another pleasant day has passed and as I draw near its close my mind runs back to just six months ago tonight, as we witnessed old Father Time reluctantly bid adieu to the scenes he had cherished so long, and was succeeded by the joyful New Year. I can surely look into the future with brighter hopes & sweeter joys than I then could, and am proud to say I attribute a large portion of it to your cheerful and pure influence. I am glad to know that God is helping to unfold more and more of the real beauties of your nature to me to such an extent that I have ceased to look for their equal. I have wondered much how you were spending the day, in some way useful I do not doubt. I have attended all the church services today, and spent the rest of the time in reading Ben Hur and the Bible. I am wonderfully interested in Ben Hur, think it is surely a wonderful book. My work here is progressing and I enjoy it so very much. I presume you know it has always been my ideal work as far as mere pleasure is concerned, therefore I am trying to get more than mere pleasure out of it. Both of my classes have increased to fifteen in number and I have two voice pupils with Lucy. I give her voice, and take instrumental of her. So altogether I am quite busy. Next Wed. we are all invited out in the country to spend the day where there are about six young people. Won't that be fine? And yet I look forward to the next Wed. as bringing more pleasure. I will indeed be pleased to have you stop if it is not asking too much. I know you have more on hands than you can hardly get through with and do not wish to take your time if it will be any hinderance to you, but please do not understand that I do not want you to come. Iberia is about a mile from the R.R. so you will come to St. James and we will meet you there. You can come down from Crestline at (arrive at St. James) 10:25 A.M. 1:30 P.M. or 7:20 P.M. Or Mr. Mayne says if it is more convenient for you, to come to Galion & he will meet you there, but that is ten miles from here and I presume you would rather come the other way. John & Lucy welcome you to their home and say they would be glad for you to be here over Sun. I have not rec'd anything from Northfield yet, but think I will get word tomorrow. I rec'd your last letter from Ada just after I sent mine. You have my daily prayers for guidance and protection. Lovingly Your Bertha.
