Dear Pauline,
Even though we have had resolutions many times during this last year to write you a letter we never seemed to have gotten around to it, but now we are trying to move off the grind and send you at least a note to tell you (1) how much we appreciate the care which you gave Richard Harris the last months of his life, and the work that went into the biographical material which you presented to the reunion of the Class of 1929 of the Westerville High School, when we were gathered together just about a year ago now. We also appreciated the letter you sent half through the year, with a note which I had sent to Richard. The notable thing being the completely legible writing which people say was the way I once did it.
We trust all goes well with you, that you continue to witness in ways which are meaningful not only to you, but all of those you contact. You no doubt know from talking with Sara Kathryn or with Edna how things, more or less, are here. We have not been out of bed for about four weeks, and the walls of the room and somewhat irregular surface of this air-mattress do not guarantee particular elements of good cheer, but we have wonderful visits — like the one from Virginia's sister this past week, and phone calls and letters like the one you send, plus the memories and so we are still conscious of the fact that the good things in life far outnumber the things that make for problems. We trust that you will forgive us for having delayed so long writing a letter. We hope that all goes well there and we must do all that each of us can do to keep in touch. We send you our deepest appreciation and abiding affection,
Most cordially,
John and Virginia Smith
