This device was used to trap eel. aka Eel Safe: which was used to keep eels alive to ship to Europe and the Orient for smoking.
Door on the front had a lock to hold it shut. On the sides are holes in the wood-- allowed the eels to live in the water while being submerged.Collection

Hinges are not rusted. Metal peice missing that helped to lock the door and frame together. Other peice of metal for lock area is rusted heavily. Wood is in good condition with a few cracks from over the years. The wire used as the cage is still connected in all areas.
