Description

Large Wooden Box which reads on the front "Norwegian Pattern...Made in England... Rotary Foghorn" On the top next to the leather handle is a set of directions which read: "Place the horn in the direction that the sound is required to travel. Turn the handle farily quickly. If turned too slowly no sound will be obtained. The regulation blasts can be separated and the length of each blast determined by stopping the turning of the handle. At the bottom of the box is a metal plate, which can be unscrewed for the purpose of oiling the interior parts; this, however is seldom required. WHEN UNSCREWING TRUMPET GREAT CARE MUST BE TAKEN NOT TO INJURE THE REED, AS THIS IS VERY SENSITIVE. Sailing vessels under way and vessels towed shall sound by foghorn, at intervals of not more ten one minute-- ONE BLAST WHEN ON STARBOARD TACK, TWO BLAST WHEN ON PORT TACK, AND THREE BLAST WHEN WITH WIND ABAFT THE BEAM. Then the directions are written in French under the English version The box sides are held together like a puzzle each side fits into a slit and then was probably glued to make it stay in place.

Notes

Many knicks and scratches on the exterior of the redish brown colored box. The directions on the top are starting to tear at the top. The foghorn itself dose not work any more since it was not cared for properly and possibly was not oiled. The crank still turns but no noise is produces. The leather handle is still intacted and 6 screws are still inbeded in it.
