Scope and Content

4 Pages stapled Has a double 2004.06.07.06.01 42 foot sail boat (the Arpege) constructed of Fiberglas and reinforced plastic went on display at the Minneford Shipyard at City Island for New Yorks Annual National Boat Show. Built by Jean Filloux, for his 2 year south pacific expedition. polyester resin, reinforced with fiberglas has been used to about 10 years to build small hulls but never a large one. Light, durable, and strong-- which is needed by the marine borers. The method Jean Filloux and George Hoffman created was a composit hull. A thin shell of mahogany veneer shaped over a conventional hull form. applied in alternate stripes with fiberglas cloth, the veneer was bonded together with Borden's Casconphen waterproof resorcin resin glue. Copper staples held it to the hull framework during bonding. A total of 30 layers of Fiberglas and resin was applied to the kneel. Maintenance is expected to be far less then a wooden boat. Fiberglas remains free from leaks, rust, corrosion, and decay without caulking, painting, or scarping. French Scientific groups are financing Filloux's underwater photography and investigations. Filloux is a 30 year old engineer from France. Who wanted to explore so he joined a crew for a 13 month voyage. Odette stayed back in New York while Jean Filloux and his crew of 2 voyaged to the south pacific, she stayed to pubish,ect.... the findings he sent bacl to her.
