Life Vest
used for a flotation device
A person would place each arm through the holes then tie the strands together which would securly hold the preserver to the person body. This device allowed the person to float in the water-- it has something in it (which is the reason it looks so bulky) that floats in the water.

Unknown what is inside of lifevest but possible that it is cork. Before the 1900's they used cork and balsa wood to fill the vest.Collection
