Hawaii forwarding agency was formed by Captain James Makee who arrived in Lahaina in 1843 as master of the whaler Maine. Makee left the ship to form his first Lahaina business partnership with one Eli Jones as the firm Jones & Makee.11 It was a general ship chandlery and shipping commission business. Jones terminated
the association and left for the United States in April 1847, and Makee then became partners with Julius A. Anthon who had joined the firm the year before. Alfred W. Bush, another enterprising man,entered the business in July of 1847, and it was then reorganized as Bush, Makee & Co., by which title it became well known.Created By
