William J Feary Leper Patient from Wailuku, MauiDescription
Letter written by Kalaupapa resident William J Feary, dated Aug 16, 1901. William Feary was admitted on December 10, 1888. Usually noted in Board of Health records as "W. Feary", he was from Wailuku, Maui. He married Emma Powers of Honolulu whom he met at Kalaupapa and they had a son named Frederick who was born there. William became the assistant superintendent, succeeding Ambrose Hutchinson who resigned in January, 1898. Historic records indicate he was not a very popular leader with the patient community. Patients felt Feary was unfair and biased in the way he managed the settlement. During an election year he retaliated against people who refused to vote for the Republican party that he supported. William died on January 6, 1905. His grave is currently unmarked because the headstone was dislodged and destroyed in the 1946 tsunami. However, interestingly, Mary Sing, who arrived in Kalauapapa in 1917, helped to identify his grave at Papaloa years ago.Created By
