Dr. Edward ArmitageDescription
Dr. Edward Armitage was a prominent British-trained physician who served as the Government Physician for the Wailuku District on Maui during the historic transition period of 1898, when the United States annexed the Republic of Hawaii. He originally arrived in Wailuku from Honolulu in June 1894 to assume his official duties as the government-appointed physician.
In 1898, as the Hawaiian Islands transitioned from an independent republic into an American territory, Dr. Armitage managed public health, localized quarantine efforts, and psychiatric/medical evaluations for the central Maui region.
Shortly after this period (in early 1900), he played a vital role alongside local authorities when a case of the bubonic plague was discovered in a Wailuku rice field, performing crucial autopsies and managing local panic to prevent an island-wide epidemic.Create Date
