Description

Land deed written in the Hawaiian language between an individual named "Kaialau" and John Rama?. Document was acknowledged and signed by E. L. Kauai. E.L. Kauai was a political candidate for the National Liberal Party in the Kingdom of Hawaii during the 19th century. in the 1892 Election, he ran for a seat in the House of Representatives (the lower house of the Hawaiian Legislature) representing the Waimea district on the island of Kauai. He was defeated in this election by Joseph Apukai Akina, who ran as a Reform Party candidate at the time but later became the first Speaker of the House for the Territory of Hawaii. The National Liberal Party was a major political faction in the 1892 election, advocating for constitutional changes and representing a significant portion of the native Hawaiian and local electorate before the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893. Signature also from Thomas G. Thrum, Registrar of Conveyances. Thomas George Thrum (1842–1932) was a prominent Hawaiian publisher, author, folklorist, and businessman who was appointed Registrar of Conveyances for the Kingdom of Hawaii, specifically around 1891. He is best remembered as the founder and editor of Thrum's Hawaiian Annual.
