As staff photographer for the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, I was regularly called upon by geologists and volcanologists to photograph unusual geological formations and volcanic events in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, and other locations on the Big Island. There were many exhilarating experiences, including hanging out of a helicopter with the doors off, photographing rivers and huge fountains of hot lava during Kīlauea and Mauna Loa eruptions. My photographs of Hawaii’s volcanic activity are distinctly memorable, both as accurate scientific documents and as artful images of rare and beautiful phenomena that few people ever witness. Since leaving the USGS, I have continued my photography on a more personal level.Created By
