Description

H.W. Schmidt was a prominent 19th-century German merchant and businessman in Honolulu, known for his trading company, his role as a consul, and his land holdings on Tantalus. The company operated as importers, wholesale merchants, and general commission agents, located at the Campbell Block on Fort Street in Honolulu. He was part of the German business community in Hawaii during the late 19th century. Consul for The Netherlands: H.W. Schmidt served as the Consul for The Netherlands in Honolulu. Provisional Government Recognition: In January 1893, he formally recognized the Provisional Government of the Hawaiian Islands on behalf of the Netherlands following the overthrow of the monarchy. Role in Local Politics: He was a member of the Anglican Church and was referred to as a senator for Honolulu in some contexts.
