The First National Bank $5 1882 (Date Back) Variety

Description

An 1882 series $5 national bank note from Charter 5550 (The First National Bank of Hawaii at Honolulu) is a rare and highly sought-after territorial collectible. The Obverse (Front): Features a detailed portrait of President James A. Garfield on the left side, who was assassinated in 1881. The text reads "National Currency" and displays the territorial bank name—The First National Bank of Hawaii at Honolulu—along with Charter Number 5550 printed in bold multiple times. The "Date Back" variety refers to a specific design print of the Series 1882 National Bank Note where the calendar years "1882–1908" are prominently printed in large numerals right in the center of the reverse side. The Reverse (Back), unlike the "Brown Back" variety (which features a brown border design and local state seals), the Date Back is printed in green ink. It showcases a vignette of George Washington on the left and the U.S. Capitol building on the right. The giant "1882–1908" date configuration dominates the center landscape. The dates represent the span of the Second Charter Period under the National Banking Act. Congress authorized these specific plates starting in 1908 to replace older varieties so banks could easily differentiate currency types at a glance.
