Carolyn Kossar (1949-2020) Green Flash-Cedar Key, 2006 mixed media 14 x 12 in. Gift of Maryann Scyocurka, Sister, from the Estate of Carolyn S. Kossar, 2022.1.8 Carolyn Kossar used many different textured materials, such as paper, wood, wool, burlap, and beach glass, to create this woven wall hanging. This fibrous sculpture is held between two wooden sticks, with a green, blue, and natural brown palette that recalls a Cedar Key landscape. The bottom of the sculpture resembles Spanish moss, in another nod to the work’s Floridian inspiration. Kossar often used glass she found walking along beaches in both Florida and the New England coast, collecting remnants of the two places closest to her. She had a fondness for trinkets and detritus, for those objects forgotten by others, as she searched for the beauty in the everyday. This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
