Roberta Schofield (b. 1945)
Italian Built, 2019
ink on canvas, digitally altered photograph
41 x 36 in.
Gift of the artist, 2023.8.1
Responding to the proliferation of cameras and digital tools in contemporary life, Roberta Schofield’s work often explores the boundaries between reality and fiction. Featuring two doors and two sets of steps, this digitally manipulated photograph of an Italian building showcases an eclectic range of hues and warped, digitally fabricated textures. The pastel hues of blue emanating from the farthest, opened door are contrasted by shadowy hues of black and burgundy surrounding the largest, closed door, arousing a sense of mystery and possibility. Cultural perception and reality blur, inviting the viewer to create their own narratives.
