“...The Queens themselves become these archetypes that are each individual that have come from this trauma. And it’s me myself trying to reestablish and reorder where things are by acting out and playing these characters.” Interdisciplinary artist Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz draws from the legacy of performance art while exploring aspects of her own identity and centering BIPOC communities. The Nature Queen series positions her body as subject, and considers themes such as identity, the diasporic experience and healing. In Nature Queen 33, she wears a patterned brown dress with an elaborate headpiece, standing in thoughtful communion with the landscape. The Queen is a figure of fluidity, able to move in and out of nature at will and boldly traverse a space that is both alluring and dangerous.
