“Love is something that happens outwards.” The inspiration for Something to remember came to Emiliano Settecasi following a period of intense reflection on selfhood, disability, and navigating the alienation of late capitalism. A scanned photo of the artists’ hand with the words “there is no self to love” written on the palm is surrounded by collaged images of groups of people and animals engaged in various activities. Settecasi cites Alan Watts’ book The Wisdom of Insecurity as providing the foundation for an expanded view of love, particularly self-love, in contrast to much of the information available to him on social media. A transitional piece in the artist’s work exploring the self, Something to remember reminds the viewer that being in communion with others is a crucial part of understanding ourselves.
