Ry McCullough (b. 1979)
Corsage, 2023
collage of diverse media
8 x 6.25 in.
Gift of Dr. Rebecca M. Nagy, 2023.11.1
In this piece, large blocks of yellow and black are situated in front of a pistachio wash of green, while smaller, articulated shapes are deliberately placed throughout the collage. Arranged meticulously into a thoughtful form using shape, space, and color, McCullough often creates systems of collage and materials that speak to limitation, restriction, and how we imbue images and objects with meaning.
McCullough states: “I see the residue and remnants of culture everywhere. It presses against, bumps into and piles up onto itself, over and over again… I find the continual remixing of cultural material to be a procedure full of compelling contradictions, overlapping accidents and layered poetic meaning that provide a supple network from which I respond in my studio activities.”
