Saumitra Chandratreya (b. 1990)
South St. Pete Transit Network, 2021
monoprint
37 x 25 in.
Gift of the artist, 2023.1
South St. Pete Transit Network is part of a series of hand-pulled silk screens detailing the artist’s running routes through the south side neighborhoods of St. Petersburg, Florida. Along his routes, Chandratreya meditates on the beauty of natural and built environments as well as the way routines impact our daily lives. These observations are visually represented in South St. Pete Transit Network, where colorful, meandering lines criss-cross over a textured background created by Chandratreya’s running shoes. The maps the artist creates by documenting his runs serve as human transit lines in an area that lacks reliable public transportation, encouraging the viewer to reflect upon their own routines, habits, and socioeconomic position.
