Suzanne Camp Crosby taught generations of students in the Tampa Bay area, including as a professor of photography at HCC for 38 years. Her work often featured settings from the region she called home, bringing new life and perspectives to the everyday through unusual or humorous additions. In Gasparilla Ship, viewers glimpse the water of Tampa Bay through the concrete railing along Bayshore Boulevard, seemingly with the iconic Jose Gasparilla Pirate Ship just beyond. However, in this case, the ship is a paper cutout perfectly perched along the railing, perhaps subtly poking fun of Tampa’s annual parade and the mythical 18th century pirate on whom the “invasion” is based.
