Aimee Jones’ work deals heavily in the corporeal. A portrait artist accustomed to painting her subjects in person, isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic led her to consider new avenues for representing the figure. Grounding Technique takes its name from a mental health practice Jones came across in the early days of the pandemic focused on regulating anxiety by noticing sensations in the body. In the painting, a crouched figure is covered by a pink mass evocative of the invasive plant species Kudzu, suggesting a body overtaken by an unwelcome presence. Much like the trees being smothered by Kudzu’s heavy vines and those following stay at home orders in 2020, the figure in Grounding Technique contends with an amorphous shroud that can be read as both protective shield and mask of invisibility.
