the rain in spain

the rain in spain: In the rain in spain, Ryan layers frenetic marks of fluorescent pink on top of a hazy black and white ground. Paint drips flowing in multiple directions suggest the painting was rotated between applying layers of spray paint, resulting in a composition reminiscent of graffiti tagging or how symbols accrue over time in an urban environment.

Claudia Ryan (b. 1952) the rain in spain, 2017 oil and spray paint on canvas 40 x 28 in. Gift of Claudia Ryan and Clayton Galleries, 2018.4.1 Influenced by popular culture, film noir, science fiction, and Christian iconography, Claudia Ryan creates abstract paintings that portray an alternative universe of feeling based on intuitive logic. Working without a final image in mind, Ryan allows her internal energy to guide her painting process as she imagines the many layers in her work as the accumulation “of all the transactions taking place in thirteen billion years of the universe.” In the rain in spain, Ryan layers frenetic marks of fluorescent pink on top of a hazy black and white ground. Paint drips flowing in multiple directions suggest the painting was rotated between applying layers of spray paint, resulting in a composition reminiscent of graffiti tagging or how symbols accrue over time in an urban environment. This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
