A combination of paint and found objects, Chiti Shakti bears the name of a concept in the tradition of yoga. In yoga philosophy, “Chiti shakti” refers to the power of universal consciousness. The term is a combination of two words in Sanskrit: chiti which means “consciousness,” and shakti which denotes the divine feminine energy associated with creating or giving birth to all things. Rose Marie Prins’ non-representational works like Chiti Shakti explore materiality and texture, as well as give new life and meaning to objects otherwise not associated with fine art. As Prins builds her textured surfaces, she is “simultaneously unearthing an abstraction of my autobiography: the work is an external metaphor for an internal process; it attests to my own emotional, spiritual and intellectual journey.”

Rose Marie Prins Chiti Shakti, 2019 mixed media 68 x 27.5 in. Gift of the artist, 2014.1.1 In yoga philosophy, “Chiti shakti” refers to the power of universal consciousness. The term is a combination of two words in Sanskrit: chiti which means “consciousness,” and shakti which denotes the divine feminine energy associated with creating or giving birth to all things. Rose Marie Prins’ Chiti Shakti creates an abstract landscape of materiality and texture by combining traditional media like paint with found objects. Prins describes the process of making these artworks as: “simultaneously unearthing an abstraction of my autobiography... the work is an external metaphor for an internal process; it attests to my own emotional, spiritual and intellectual journey.” This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
