Alejandra Gotera (b. 1994) Meditation is a thing I have yet to master…, 2021 acrylic paint 28 x 40 in. Gift of the artist, 2021.29.1 Alejandra Gotera builds fully abstract compositions out of a frenzy of marks and bright fields of color, an exercise in finding stability amidst chaos that reflects her experiences as a Venezuelan living and working in the United States. Bright colors are meant to both disorient and captivate the viewer, while lines become paths to different outcomes that hint at new worlds and endless possibilities. This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. Alejandra Gotera (b. 1994, Venezuelan) Meditation is a thing I have yet to master, 2021 acrylic, charcoal, and graphite on canvas 40 x 28 x 2 in. Gift of the artist, 2021.29.1 With intentionally disorienting yet captivating fields of color, meticulous line markings, and a title referencing a meditation practice, Gotera seemingly alludes to a dichotomy of vibrantly orchestrated chaos within her internal world. Is meditation a thing that one can truly master, or could this piece suggest that there is a fluidity of progress in the procession of quieting the mind?
