Carolyn Kossar (1949-2020) Winter II, 2007 mixed media 15 x 12 in. Gift of Maryann Scyocurka, Sister, from the Estate of Carolyn S. Kossar, 2022.1.7 Winter II is composed of found fibers, paper, wood, wool, jute, and metallic thread on cotton wrap. Kossar’s mixed-media sculpture also consists of tree bark and rope at the top of the composition, and woven between are pieces of rubber, plastics, and other materials. The artist incorporates two shades of blue at the top of the sculpture, as well as lilac and orange fibers at the bottom. The change in color palette could suggest the transition between seasons, as winter ends and spring begins. Kossar often collected materials when she visited her hometown in New England, revisiting paths she walked in her childhood. She frequently brought these “bits of home” back with her when she returned to Tampa and incorporated them in her practice here. This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
