Carol Mickett and Robert Stackhouse’s recent work (since 2007) focuses on ways of representing water both two dimensionally and three dimensionally. The varying temperaments, movement, and global interconnections of water have generated paintings as well as large-scale, architectural, pass-through sculptures. Their work is intended to raise questions about our relationships with bodies of water: oceans, rivers, and gulfs, and their contribution to shaping our identities. Mickett and Stackhouse’s work also acts as a metaphor for their collaboration, the process of making art, and the living of a life. Their painting T/Here provides a good example. T/Here, on the one hand, is a map of the Gulf of Mexico, i.e., a map of Here. The painting, on the other hand, is a map of the water currents of the world, i.e., a map of There. The world’s water currents contribute to the character, temperature and weather of the Gulf of Mexico. Indeed, there is no pure Here. The Gulf of Mexico, us, and everything else, including what we create, is part of a cosmic collaboration. Water is no one thing and neither is the process of making art or living a life. We, just as water, move from one place to another. Up and down. In and out. Sometimes moving effortlessly and, then, all of a sudden, being tossed about without any sense of control. Sometimes we come together and at other times we are pulled apart. All very much like riding the waves.
