Carolyn Heller (1937-2011)
Landscape at Dusk, c. 1980-2011
monoprint
41 x 28 in.
Gift of Fran Heller, 2022.12.6
Carolyn Heller was drawn to the abstract, its free form and vibrancy in artists she admired, such as Ida Kohlmeyer, Elaine de Kooning, Syd Solomon and other abstract expressionists. Landscape at Dusk is in conversation with this tradition, as this abstract collection of black, red, and blue patches echoes her predecessors. Carolyn’s intentions were often irreverent and flirtatious, and her blocks of color offer only the merest hint of a recognizable landscape. She playfully prods at the genre, choosing a vertical orientation rather than the expected horizontal format. Carolyn Heller’s wide-ranging works are held in private and public collections across the United States.
